Will Landsat data be available in both Collection 1 and Pre-Collection data sets?

During the transitional time periods of Collection 1 reprocessing, all newly acquired Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 data will be processed and made available in both the Pre-Collection Landsat Archive data sets and the Collection 1 Level-1 data sets until April 30, 2017. After this date, forward processing for Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 Pre-Collection data will be turned off due to space limitations. Only forward processing for Landsat Collection 1 data will continue.

The existing Pre-Collection datasets will be retained for some time after forward processing is turned off (specific timeframe is yet to be determined). Users are strongly encouraged to start utilizing Collection 1 data. Announcements will be made to alert users when each dataset has completed Collection 1 processing and when the Pre-Collection datasets will be removed.

The Landsat Collections Web page contains the details about all aspects of the Collection 1 effort.

Landsat represents the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data. Four decades of imagery provides a unique resource for those who work in agriculture, geology, forestry, regional planning, education, mapping, and global change research. Landsat images are also invaluable for emergency response and disaster relief.
